If you have a tooth that is darker than usual, it’s probably because you’ve had an infection, a root canal treatment, or sustained some kind of trauma. A darkened tooth often indicates the living cells inside it have died. But dead or not, it doesn’t mean you have to lose the tooth or that it can’t return to its natural shade of white.

Internal Teeth Whitening Explained

Ordinarily, teeth whitening focuses on removing stains and discolouration from the surface of your teeth. These treatments use peroxide to return the exterior of your teeth to a natural shade of white.

When discolouration is deep within your tooth, regular teeth whitening won’t work. Instead, we can use the same principle to whiten the inside of your teeth.

Internal teeth whitening uses a safe whitening solution to brighten your teeth. Once the short process is complete, we’ll close your tooth with a filling.

Let’s Whiten

Internal whitening is a straightforward process. Before, we’ll make a very small hole in your tooth. Don’t worry—this step is quick and painless and we’ll repair the hole at the end.

Next, we’ll block off access to your tooth’s root canals. These are the channels which run in the roots of your teeth. We’ll then inject the whitening solution.

After whitening your teeth, we’ll close the small hole we made using a tooth-coloured filling.
